BOOK EDINBURGHWe live in bodies that are constantly responding to the world around us — every rushed commute, every tense conversation, every hour hunched over a screen leaves a residue, a subtle tightening we stop noticing until it becomes our baseline.
Most approaches to tension and restricted movement work on the body from the outside — stretching, adjusting, releasing. These can genuinely help, but they often miss the part that's actually in charge: your nervous system, which over time learns to hold certain muscles in chronic tension, usually without you ever noticing. Thomas Hanna called this sensory motor amnesia — the brain forgetting it has full voluntary control over a muscle, so no amount of stretching fully releases it while the instruction to hold is still being sent. Somatic education works differently. Through slow, deliberate movement, you learn to sense what your nervous system has been doing, and teach it a new way. Nothing forced, nothing pushed through — the change comes from awareness, not effort.
This two-day intensive, in the tradition of Hanna's Clinical Somatic Education, is an invitation to do exactly that — building across two days from foundational sensing and release into deeper integration, with space for movement professionals and Essential Somatics-trained teachers to carry the work into their own practice.
"The body is not a machine to be fixed. It is a living process to be educated."
— Thomas Hanna
If you can feel it, you can change it.
Choice follows awareness.
— Katrin Neue
This weekend is for
The programme below applies to both the Glasgow and Edinburgh events. Glasgow runs Friday and Saturday; Edinburgh runs Saturday and Sunday. The shape of each day is identical.
Day One
10:30 — 13:30
Morning intensive — foundations of somatic education
We begin on the floor. Working through the core principles of Hanna Somatics — the sensory motor amnesia patterns, the reflexes of stress and trauma, and the extraordinary capacity of the nervous system to change. Guided pandiculation sequences, floor-based movement and supported partner work.
13:30 — 15:00
Lunch
A generous break to rest and integrate. Bring your own or explore nearby — local options shared on booking confirmation.
Break15:00 — 17:30
Afternoon session — deepening and refining
Building on the morning's foundation, we return to the body with fresh awareness. The afternoon offers space to revisit what arose — refining your understanding of each pattern, integrating what you sensed and discovered, and exploring the sequences with greater ease and precision.
Day Two
10:00 — 13:00
Morning intensive — integration and the breath
Building on day one's foundation. A deeper exploration of the respiratory and postural reflexes, working with the psoas and the diaphragm, and somatic sequences for the nervous system, with attention to clinical application and client adaptation for the practitioners in the room.
13:00 — 14:00
Lunch
Break14:00 — 16:30
Afternoon session — bringing the threads together
Our final full session returns to the floor with everything the weekend has opened. Slower, deeper sequences with space to revisit what asked for the most attention. Those with a background in Essential Somatics training are welcome to bring their teaching questions — drawing on Katrin's twelve years of teaching Hanna's work and twenty-five years of movement teaching, this is a rare opportunity to ask what can only be asked in the room.
16:30 — 17:00
Integration and close
Katrin brings the weekend together. What to take home. Signposting for further study.
Attendance certificates are issued on the final afternoon, recording dates, hours and content — a record of attendance rather than a teaching qualification, which you may submit as self-certified continuing development where your professional body accepts it.
Clinical Somatic Educator · Dublin
Katrin Neue is one of Ireland's most experienced somatic movement educators — a clinically trained practitioner whose work bridges the precision of neurological re-education with the fluidity of a lifelong dance and movement practice.
Trained under Essential Somatics founder Martha Peterson, Katrin has spent over a decade working one-to-one and in group settings with people living with chronic pain, restricted movement, and the physical residue of stress and trauma. She teaches regularly in Dublin, runs online courses, and leads international workshops — including bi-annual somatic intensives in Finland, in a format closely mirroring what she will bring to Scotland.
Her approach is both rigorous and deeply humane. She moves easily between working with absolute beginners and supporting experienced movement professionals developing their clinical practice. Both weekends will reflect this.
somadublin.com ↗All attendees receive a certificate of attendance recording the dates, hours and content of the weekend. This is a record of attendance rather than a teaching qualification — where your professional body permits self-certified continuing development, you may submit it accordingly.
Please confirm acceptance with your own professional body prior to booking if this matters to your practice.
Both events run the same two-day programme with the same trainer and the same pricing. Places are strictly limited to 30 at each.
